Before you pay
- Check for the BIS hallmark, stated purity/fineness and six-character HUID.
- Use the official BIS Care “Verify HUID” feature on the jewellery item.
- Compare jewellery description and fineness against the invoice.
- Ask to inspect the hallmark with suitable magnification.
- Check the required registration display and jeweller information.
- Keep the invoice and contact a BIS-recognised AHC for appropriate testing if needed.
What an invoice should make clear
BIS guidance identifies article description, precious-metal net weight, carat/fineness and hallmarking charges among the particulars for the invoice of a hallmarked precious-metal article. A useful invoice makes it easier to raise a concern later.
If there is a purity concern
BIS describes consumer sample testing through recognised AHCs and compensation provisions in specified cases of purity shortfall in hallmarked jewellery. Eligibility and procedure depend on the applicable rules, so consult BIS directly.
Remember
A photo of a hallmark or a number typed into a non-official website is not equivalent to BIS Care verification. This guide does not certify a jewellery item.
